Kent Nielsen pegede selv på John Bredal som sin assistent, da han blev ny træner i OB, så de to har arbejdet sammen i den fynske klub i tæt på tre år.

Cheftræneren har kontrakt et år endnu, men lige om lidt er det slut for Bredal, der ikke får forlænget sin kontrakt med OB, selvom Kent Nielsen gerne ville beholde ham.

Det var sportsdirektør, Jesper Hansen, der traf beslutningen om, at Bredal ikke skulle fortsætte. Den beslutning blev truffet tilbage i februar, og Bredal fortæller, at der ikke har været snak om, at han skulle fortsætte.

– Nej, ikke i år. Jeg forlængede jo min aftale sidste år i februar, så den var gældende her til sommer. Udover det har der ikke været nogle drøftelser.

Efter Bredal fik at vide, at han ikke skulle fortsætte, har han stadig leveret en professionel indsats i sit job, og han mener da heller ikke selv, han har haft svært ved at motivere sig.

– Nej, det her det ikke. Som jeg har nævnt, så blev jeg overrasket i februar, da jeg fik meddelelsen. Jeg kom ned på kontoret til Kent, og vi konstaterede, at tingene var, som de var. Han havde også først selv fået det at vide om morgenen. Inden der var gået fem minutter gav jeg ham håndslag på, at hvis jeg havde arbejdet 100% de første to og et halvt år, så ville jeg arbejde 110% nu, for jeg ville fandme slutte ordentligt af. Det synes jeg, at jeg har vist.

Det er snart tre år siden, Bredal kom til OB fra FC Nordsjælland, og han synes, han har oplevet en ganske fin udvikling i klubben.

– Jeg synes, det har været en fornuftig udvikling. Kent og jeg kommer til klubben, hvor de er blevet nummer ti, ti, otte og ni, fire år i træk med kun 12 hold i rækken, så man har været ved at rykke ned. Vi fik at vide, der skulle sælges nogle spillere, og der skulle skæres ned på lønbudgettet, og så vidt jeg forstår, så har vi levet op til det.

– Udviklingen har været fin. Man har fået JJ, Desler og Greve med, som er egne folk, og man har haft stor udskiftning. Jeg synes, det har været en god udvikling, men jeg erkender da også, at de to gange vi misser top seks med et par point, det har selvfølgelig været ærgerligt, og det havde nok givet et andet løft.

Bredal har 18 års erfaring som træner, og han mener da også, at han har kunne bruge sin erfaring til at ændre på noget i dagligdagen i klubben.

– Ja, det synes jeg. Jeg synes, jeg har fået sat mit aftryk omkring reserveholdet, hvordan det kan køres. Jeg har ikke nogen facitliste, men jeg synes, og det har jeg fået at vide af tilskuere til kampene og af spillere internt i klubben, at der er kommet en anden aura omkring reserveholdet, og sandt for dyden har vi også vundet rigtig mange kampe. Så det synes jeg, at jeg har været med til at flytte.

Han har dog ikke kun brugt tiden i klubben til at præge den med hans egne idéer, han har også selv lært noget af at være i OB.

– Ja, det har jeg. Man kan lære noget alle steder, man kan suge til sig osv. Jeg har lært noget af at gå op af Kent. Jeg har ikke været i så mange klubber, det er kun min tredje klub på 18 år, så jeg har bare set, hvordan OB gør det. Så har jeg som sagt prøvet at påvirke reserveholdet i en retning, og det er da egentlig gået meget godt. Jeg har været vant til at udvikle talenter i FC Nordsjælland, og der er vi også kommet et stykke vej med, at vi henter Frederik Tingager i 2. division, og det fik vi kritik af. Lige pludselig får vi også kritik af, at vi sælger ham, og får penge for ham, og der tænkte jeg, ‘Det er sgu da lidt mærkeligt’, for det oplevede jeg aldrig i Nordsjælland.

– Jeg har lært meget her, også fordi OB har en forholdsvis lille trænerstab i forhold til mange andre Superligaklubber, så jeg har haft et ret stort ansvar, synes jeg, og har været begunstiget af det, og det har jeg selvfølgelig lært noget af.

Inden Bredal kom til OB, var reserveholdet nærmest noget, vi bare havde, men for ham har det været vigtigt at få sat noget mere fokus på det.

– Det er vigtigt fordi, at når du har unge spillere, fra U19 eller dem der lige kommer op, så er der et kæmpe spring fra U19 til Superliga. Der synes jeg, at reserveholdet skal være bindeleddet, der hvor de bliver uddannet, og lærer, at sådan er det på Superligaholdet. Når Kent og jeg kører en Superligakamp, så kører jeg en reserveholdskamp nøjagtig magen til, den eneste forskel er stort set bare antallet af tilskuere. Standardsituationerne bliver arbejdet med på samme måde, og næsten alt opvarmning, så den dag de ender på Superligaholdet, er der ikke noget, der kommer bagpå dem.

– Julius Eskesen er jo gået fra U19 til reserveholdet, og nu er ham med omkring Superligaholdet, og jeg prøver at gøre reserveholdet til en uddannelsesinstitution til reserveholdet, og det synes jeg faktisk, er gået fornuftigt.

Der er heller ingen tvivl om, at det er nogle gode resultater, Bredal har lavet med reserveholdet, og det er der nogle forskellige årsager til.

– Jeg lever også af, at OB er fyldt med gode spillere, og vi har en god bred trup. I bund og grund har jeg vel bare taget det seriøst, og groft sagt tør spillerne næsten ikke andet end at præstere, og det skal de kraftedeme også, og jeg forklarer dem, hvor vigtigt det er. Jeg kan ikke tolerere en spiller, der kommer oppe fra Superligaholdet, fordi han måske har en karantæne, eller har været skadet, og som kun performer 60%. Der har været enkelte eksempler på, at man har skiftet folk, og jeg har sagt, at det ikke har været nok, og det lærer de hurtigt, at den ikke går.

– Det er vel bare at optimere og forklare folk, at det her er vigtigt. Det er lige så vigtigt, som vi gør det til, men for mig er det vigtigt, at man er klar til, at man lige pludselig står i Superligatruppen af en eller anden årsag. Så skal man bare ind og præstere, og der er stationen altså reserveholdet.

Som træner for reserveholdet gælder det selvfølgelig om at holde spillerne skarpe til Superliga-holdet, men samtidig vil man også gerne vinde kampe. Bredal ved dog godt, hvad der er det vigtigste.

– Det er at holde dem skarpe. Af og til har vi også været nødt til at sætte et hold, som ikke var det optimale, hvis det bare var resultatet, det handlede om. Vi har også sagt, at ‘Ham og ham skal have spilletid, og ham er vi nødt til at spare, så der ikke sker noget’, så at gøre spillerne klar til førsteholdet er førsteprioritet. En stor del af uddannelsen i at være på Superligaholdet er også at vinde fodboldkampe i min verden. Brøndby-bænken med Zorniger i spidsen stod jo, og gloede helt åndssvagt, da vi førte 4-1 i Brøndby, og jeg stadigvæk blæser dem fremad, og råber ‘Slå dem nu ihjel’. Hvor tit får vi chancen for at slå Brøndby ihjel? Det havde vi, og Retov kom hen til mig efter kampen, og sagde ‘Tak for lektionen Bredal, godt den ikke varede ti minutter mere, for så havde i vundet med ti’. Det er dejligt at se og mærke for mig, for hvor tit får man muligheden for at slå dem ihjel? FC Nordsjælland, Brøndby, FCK og dem dér, og nu havde vi muligheden, og den skulle vi tage. Jeg er aldrig tilfreds med det næstbedste.

Tidligere på året fik Joan Simun Edmundsson besked på, at han ikke kom til at spille for Superliga-holdet mere. Han blev dog ved med at præstere godt på reserveholdet, og det har Bredal en del af æren for.

– Jeg har fortalt ham, at når han nu var her hos os, så skulle han præstere, for han skulle have et liv efter OB, og så var det også vigtigt for ham, uanset hvor det liv blev henne, det blev så Bielefeld, men det kunne have været alle mulige andre steder, så skulle han præstere for sin egen og holdets skyld. Jeg forklarede ham også, at de der reserveholdskampe de bliver altså set af mange. Måske ikke af så mange tilskuere, men af de rigtige folk, der måske godt ved, at han var fri. Mod Brøndby spiller han faktisk en rigtig god kamp. Det gjorde han i begge Brøndby-kampe. Det hold vi møder ovre i Brøndby, og vinder 7-1 over, det var et ret godt hold, de stillede med den dag. De var til gengæld meget unge, da de kom herover, og skulle spille, men sådan er det.

Assistenten fortæller, at han var ærgerlig over ikke at fortsætte i OB, lige da han fik beskeden, men han var ikke længe om at acceptere, at det var sådan.

– Ærgrelsen lagde sig lidt hurtigt, for det var sådan, det var, og så var det bare det. Som jeg også sagde til Kent og truppen, så var det sådan, det var, og jeg ville arbejde 100% videre. Ærgrelsen lagde sig forholdsvis hurtigt, og så er det bare at forholde sig til, at det er sådan, det er, og jeg har vidst det i nogle måneder. Det er fair nok.

Samarbejdet mellem Bredal og Kent Nielsen har været oppe og vende tidligere, men han er glad for, at de fik muligheden for det i OB, og han har været meget tilfreds med det.

– Det har været fint. Det var jo lidt en prøvelse. Vi kendte hinanden som kollegaer, og Kent havde haft bud efter mig før, da han var i Brøndby, hvor det ikke lige kunne lade sig gøre, så nu prøvede vi det. Vi gik begge to ind til det, og tænkte, vi skulle se, hvordan det gik, når vi sad overfor hinanden hver dag. Man ser jo mere til hinanden, end man ser til sin hustru.

– Jeg synes, det er gået godt, og Kent er meget ærlig, og skal nok fortælle, hvis der er noget, der ikke er i orden, så jeg er sikker på, at hvis han ikke mente, det var i orden, så havde han sagt det til mig. Sådan er han heldigvis.

De tre år i OB har været gode for Bredal, og han har været rigtig glad for at arbejde i de omgivelser, der er i klubben.

– Jeg har haft tre gode år i OB. Det er et dejligt sted, fine omgivelser og en dejlig Bane 1, som jeg elsker at komme ud på. OB mangler en lille smule faciliteter, men det ved alle jo, og der bliver arbejdet hårdt på det. Bygningen er fredet, så man kan ikke bare lige lave bedre forhold til omklædning og noget andet. Det har jo stået på i 20 år, også længe før mig, men jeg synes da, de prøver at flytte det. Jeg har haft en god tid i OB, og der er mange dejlige mennesker.

På tre år kan man nå at sætte sit præg på en del ting, men når Bredal tænker over hans tid i klubben, ved han godt, hvad han har været mest stolt af.

– Det er vel egentlig, at når folk føler, reserveholdet er løftet væsentligt, så er jeg da glad for at have sat et aftryk der. Det at vi allesammen i truppen kunne løfte Kenneth Zohore så meget, som vi gjorde, fordi han ikke var så godt kørende, da vi kom. Der var også lige nogle afstemningsproblemer, fordi han ikke lige var vant til, at sådan en som mig, sagde noget til ham, og virkelig mente det. Der fik han lidt tæsk. Så blev han så solgt til Cardiff, og det var jeg også glad for at være en del af.

Folk omkring klubben oplever tit OB som en lille familie. Er det også den oplevelse, du har haft?

– Ja, inde i rummene her der synes jeg, det er en hyggelig lille familie. Der er nogle her i klubben, der arbejder sindssygt hårdt, og som er meget vigtige for klubben. Det håber jeg, man værdsætter og honorerer.

Bredals forhold til OB startede egentlig, længe før han kom til klubben som assistent, og derfor vil han heller ikke kunne give slip på klubben i fremtiden.

– Det er helt sikkert, jeg kommer til at følge den klub her. Min barndomsklub er jo B93, og de har et samarbejde med OB, og min første ‘udlandstur’ var jo til OB, for vi var venskabsklubber. Da jeg kom her første gang for tre år siden, kunne jeg godt kende Ådalen. Jeg var her som knægt, hvor vi boede privat sammen med de her OB-drenge, og de kom også over til os. Jeg vil helt sikkert følge OB, og så sent som for 14 dage siden var jeg på B93 til noget nostalgifest, hvor de spurgte, om jeg ville komme med over den 26. juni, hvor Old Boys-afdelingen skal herover til OB, men det kan jeg desværre ikke. Jeg vil altid følge OB, for der er jo mange spillere, som jeg har fået relationer til, og jeg skal holde øje med, hvordan det går dem. Jeg håber alt det bedste for dem allesammen.

Hvad skal du bruge dine træneregenskaber på i fremtiden?

– Jeg håber, at jeg enten kan have den rolle, jeg har nu, hvor jeg er assistent for en dygtig cheftræner, ellers håber jeg på, at jeg kan få mit eget hold.

Hvad kommer du til at savne mest fra OB?

– Jeg kommer nok til at savne den familie, i snakker om. Den her ånd der er her omkring OB, og de gutter der arbejder så vanvittigt hårdt for at få det her til at fungere. Det er prisværdigt.
